Letter-writer Greg Harrod says we need to evaluate Barack Obama's record concerning gun-control ["Watch out if Dems gain total control" Oct. 15].
Perhaps we should.
Sen. Obama's record shows that he knows how to change things for the better in America.
Evaluate America's record. America has very loose laws dealing with gun control.
These are ugly numbers, but Mr. Harrod claims that Sen. Obama's attempts to limit firearms are uglier.
Examine Canada's record. Canada has very strict laws governing gun control. Approximately 200 people were killed with firearms in Canada in 2005.
The records speak for themselves; stricter policies equal less violence.
Contrary to Mr. Harrod's worries, anti-gun legislators don't want to revoke the Second Amendment; they just want to make our streets safer.
Americans should embrace any opportunity to prevent another horrible act like the Virginia Tech shooting. If we continue to enact loose gun-control laws, we will continue to experience tragedies like Columbine.
Mr. Harrod says we can run from our records, but we can't hide from them. We should stop running from America's record on gun violence and start fixing it.
However, you can't fix a problem if you don't know the cause. So don't listen to people who say guns aren't the issue. Listen to people like Sen. Obama who know what the causes are and how to find solutions
