Former Redskins, sports memorabilia shop and food bank team up to raise money for turkeys
By DAN TELVOCK
The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank is hoping to get at least 2,500 turkeys this holiday season, and it will call on a bunch of football players to help.
The Second Annual Thanks-giving Signing Feast is tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Card Cellar at Four-Mile Fork Shopping Center.
"Last year they raised over $5,000," said Oya Oliver, the executive director of the food bank. "We gave turkeys to about 625 households."
Oliver said a total of $12,908 was raised from the community last year during the holiday season, which provided more than 2,200 turkeys. The card-signing event brought in the largest single donation.
She said the food bank looks forward to this event as a way to provide families with an extra-special treat for the holidays.
"We push to try to do something a little different than our ordinary emergency food distribution," she said.
The event will bring six former Washington Redskins together in one setting to sign items for fans. The $10 fee for each signing goes directly to the food bank. There is also a raffle.
Mike Nelms, a defensive back who was named one of the 70 greatest players in Washington Redskins history, will attend again this year.
