7-Eleven seeking franchisees

7-Eleven going totally to a franchise model; stores available in Fredericksburg area

Date published: 11/20/2008

BY BILL FREEHLING

7-Eleven is in the process of converting the majority of its company-operated stores into franchised operations, and several Fredericksburg-area locations are available.

About 75 percent of 7-Eleven's more than 5,600 U.S. stores are now franchised, the company says, and it's moving aggressively to convert the others.

That decision mirrors recent announcements by several large oil companies that are shifting away from company-owned retail stores, said Jeff Lenard, spokesman for the National Association of Convenience Stores.

He said ConocoPhillips, BP and ExxonMobil are among the companies that have recently announced plans to sell retail stores to independent operators.

Not all convenience store operators have gone that route, however. Wawa and Sheetz, both of which also have a strong presence in the Fredericksburg area, don't have any franchise stores.

7-Eleven has 16 stores in the Fredericksburg area, said Desi Desormeaux, 7-Eleven's regional franchise sales manager. Nine are available for franchising--including five in Fredericksburg, three in Stafford County and one in King George County. There are additional stores available in the Baltimore and Washington areas.

Desormeaux said 7-Eleven is moving exclusively to the franchise model because "we believe that when someone puts their hard-earned money into a franchise they have a vested interest in that business."

The average fee paid to become a 7-Eleven franchisee is $215,000--which includes the store's opening inventory, supplies, business licenses, permits, bonds, cash register fund, franchise fee and more.

Fredericksburg-area residents interested in becoming a 7-Eleven franchise owner can contact Larry Draper at 804/353-7875, ext. 13, or visit 7-Eleven.com and click "Franchising."
