Cars damaged in chase

Mystery man arrested following Stafford chase

Date published: 11/22/2008

BY KEITH EPPS

A fleeing driver struck six vehicles Thursday during an unsuccessful attempt to elude police in North Stafford, police said.

According to state police Sgt. Les Tyler, the incident started about 3:25 p.m. with a traffic stop in the Market Street Shopping Center on Garrisonville Road (State Route 610).

The driver pulled away after the stop and struck three vehicles as he was leaving the shopping center.

The man drove west on Garrisonville Road, Tyler said, and hit two more vehicles at the intersection of Route 610 and Mine Road.

Tyler said he continued west and struck another vehicle at Onville Road. After that collision, the man's vehicle jumped the curbed median and stopped in the eastbound lanes.

The man got out and started to run, Tyler said, but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody without further incident.

No one in any of the struck vehicles was injured, Tyler said, but there was significant property damage.

Police would not name the man because his apprehension was part of a ongoing criminal investigation, Tyler said. Charges related to the Stafford incident are pending.

A task force made up of officers from the Albemarle Sheriff's Office, the Charlottesville Police Department, the University of Virginia Police Department and state police is involved in the investigation.

A passenger in the man's vehicle was taken into custody during the initial traffic stop, Tyler said.
