Edward L. Duncan

Edward Lee Duncan, 93, of Winchester died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Duncan was born in 1915 in Athens, Ga., the son of Jessie and Jean G. Duncan. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1938, and his first assignment was at Quantico Marine Corps base. Through his Marine career, his assignments took him to Midway Island, Virgin Islands, Cherry Point, N.C., and Hawaii to name a few. He retired in 1960 from the Quantico base as chief warrant officer.

He then went to work as a correctional officer with the Department of Corrections in Lorton, retiring after 18 years.

He bought his first home in Woodbridge in 1957, where he resided until 2005, when due to failing health, he moved to Winchester with his son and daughter-in-law. He found joy in being with and watching his grandchildren grow up. He also was a great admirer of man's best friend, dogs, in particular miniature schnauzers, of which he was always a proud owner. He was always the handyman around the house, could repair anything, enjoyed working on his car, reading the newspaper, working the daily crossword puzzle and watching game shows on television.

He married Kathryn P. Pinkerton Sept. 10, 1942, in Alexandria.

He is survived by his daughter, Trinette Duncan of Fredericksburg; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kathy Duncan of Winchester; a grandson and his wife, Rik and Rose Lawhorne of Partlow; a granddaughter and her husband, Melanie and Andrew Harper of Fredericksburg; a great-granddaughter, Kathryn; and his brother, Eugene Duncan of Alpharetta, Ga. He also leaves his miniature schnauzer, Dee Dee.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathryn, and a sister, Luna Mae Stringer of Atlanta, Ga.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. Kenneth Wales officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 26, from noon until the time of service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York, N.Y. 10016.
