The second suspicious Culpeper fire in just over a week destroyed a large hay barn on Dutch Hollow Road early today.
Firefighters from five companies were called to Ralph Pullen’s farm just after midnight and fought the blaze until almost dawn.
The fire destroyed the 55-by-165-foot hay shed, 600 rolls of cattle hay and 1,200 square bales of horse hay, Pullen said. Also lost were a gravity-flow wagon filled with wheat and a hay lift.
The 77-year-old farmer said the shed cost $54,000 when built in the 1970s.
The shell of a second of three similar sheds was damaged. Pullen credits volunteer firefighters with saving it.
Pullen said evidence was found near the site that indicated arson to him.
“I think somebody set it on fire,” Pullen said, noting that there were no tractors inside and the shed did not have electricity.
He said the hay was dry and the last bales were stored there in July.
The Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office called the fire suspicious and asked Virginia State Police to help determine the origin.
State police arson investigators still have not determined the cause of a fire that destroyed a Virginia Parole and Probation office on the Orange Road before dawn Nov. 24.
