Noted economist and scholar Dr. John Quincy Adams died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at VCU Medical Center in Richmond.
Dr. Adams was a professor at the University of Maryland from 1966 to 1989 and chairman of the economics department at Northeastern University from 1989 to 1997.
His primary interests were economic development and social change in South Asia, with an emphasis on India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
After retirement, Dr. Adams consulted in South Asia. During the past several years, he used his expertise with those countries to write affidavits for political and religious asylum cases. Dr. Adams wrote, edited and contributed to numerous publications and books.
Dr. Adams was devoted to his family, his wife, Adele; his son, Michael Adams of Arlington, Mass.; his daughters, Jenni Gallo of Richmond and Lara Adams of Cambridge, Mass.; his stepchildren, Paula Murdock of Mechanicsville, Md., and Frank Manuel of Bowie, Md.; and his sisters, Kay Adams McCabe of San Antonio, Texas, and Jan Hyson of Wellesley, Mass. He had nine grandchildren from seven months to 23 years old, including Katie, Nathan, Paul, Lucy, Philip, Gage, Shelby, Leigh and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his brother, Philip E. Adams of Dallas, Texas.
His family bids a fond farewell to the head honcho.
