A Richmond County grand jury yesterday indicted a Westmoreland County man on charges of killing his cousin on their way home from a party in July.
Deputies charged Jerrell Deandre "Jelly" Jackson, 23, of Hague with second-degree murder after O'Prentiss Ball, a 2007 graduate of Washington & Lee High School, died after being shot near Farnham.
Jackson and Ball lived across Tavern Run Road from each other in the Burton's Corner community of Westmoreland County.
Ball, a varsity basketball player at W&L, was also a James Farmer Scholar at the University of Mary Washington. The program helps area black students gain college admission.
Jackson was indicted in July on two firearm felonies resulting from the shooting incident. The Richmond County Circuit Court had previously scheduled a March 23 trial on those charges. After yesterday's indictment, the court added the second-degree murder charge to the case.
Fifty members of the family of Ball and Jackson attended a hearing Friday in Warsaw to protest the handling of the case by Richmond County deputies and Commonwealth's Attorney Wayne L. Emery, said William J. Ball of Stafford County.
William Ball, the victim's second cousin, said, "Emery is not telling us anything. He won't return our calls. Everybody is putting it off as something that just happened. We want to know what happened. We are frustrated and we want closure."
Emery declined comment yesterday on the family's concerns.
Jackson remains jailed in Warsaw. He had been released on bond, but it was revoked in October after he was charged in Northumberland County for driving and drug offenses.
