Lanford Collins made an oral commitment yesterday, but he's not telling where.

The Brooke Point High School senior defensive end wants to wait until National Signing Day to announce his decision. Collins, one of the state's most sought-after football recruits, said he will announce his decision Wednesday afternoon in the Brooke Point auditorium.

National Signing Day is the first time players can officially sign national letters of intent with their school of choice.

Collins (6-foot-4, 240 pounds) has told Brooke Point head coach Jeff Berry, his parents and the coaching staff at the school of his choice about his decision.

Virginia, Virginia Tech and Penn State were the final three schools in the running for his services. Collins has visited all three schools, including an official visit to Virginia Tech last weekend.

"After the last visit was taken, I just [evaluated] everything from all my visits and made a decision," Collins said.

Collins, a first-team Free Lance-Star All-Area performer, won't be the only Black-Hawk making news in the school's auditorium on Wednesday. Quarterback Brian Hudson and running back Chase Barnett both will sign with Liberty University.

"It won't be the Lanford Collins show," Berry said.

MORALE BOOST FOR FOXES

When King George plays its first basketball game at its new school tomorrow night, it won't just be a fun sporting event.

Athletic director John Spiak, boys basketball coach Jeff Smith and football coach John Bryant all said the new school has given the students and community a "morale boost."

The Foxes host Chancellor tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

"It's very exciting," Smith said. "Of course we haven't had a chance to practice there yet, but a couple of kids took a tour and they were just in awe. It's double, maybe triple the size of our old gym."

Spiak said the new school may enable King George to host big basketball, volleyball and wrestling tournaments.

"Before we didn't have the facilities to do that," Spiak said. "The ceilings were too low and the gym wasn't big enough."

Bryant said he's excited about the school's new weightlifting facility. The athletic teams will also have locker rooms separate from those that physical education classes use.

The outdoor sports facilities are still a work in progress. Spiak said all spring sports will be played at the old school.

Spiak said the football team will have a practice field at the new school. But he added that talks of a new stadium are still in the preliminary stages with the county Board of Supervisors.

FROM EAGLE TO COBRA

Washington & Lee softball standout Bailee Packett will continue her playing career at Virginia Intermont College.

Packett was named a first-team all-Northern Neck District pitcher after two of the previous three seasons. She's also a standout shortstop. She'll play pitcher, first base or outfield for the Cobras, W&L athletic director Malcolm Lewis said.

Virginia Intermont is a NAIA school located in Bristol. It competes in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
