Although work has yet to begin, Regal Entertainment Group is sticking to the script for improving its Fredericksburg-area theaters.
The company had announced that it would remodel Regal Fredericksburg 15 in Central Park in phases starting in the fourth quarter of last year, and replace the Regal Aquia 10 in Stafford County. Both were to open this summer.
Renovation at Regal Fredericksburg 15 has been delayed because designers encountered more problems than they had expected, said Russ Nunley, Regal's vice president of marketing and communications.
"Anyone who has done a remodeling project knows that there can be surprises on the way," he said. "We are going through the process and no one has revised the time line. We're going forward as expeditiously as we can."
Nunley said that Aquia 10 hasn't been torn down yet because Regal is waiting on Ramco-Gershenson Properties Trust, which is developing the Town Center at Aquia at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Garrisonville Road. The shopping center, originally Aquia Towne Center, is being converted into a mixed-use development with offices, residential units, restaurants and retail stores.
Tight credit and a weak economy have slowed progress on that entire project, but the trust is still pushing forward with plans for a new 14-screen, 55,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art movie theater, said Ed Wizner, Ramco-Gershenson Properties' vice president of development/redevelopment. He said he hopes the new theater will be ready by fall 2010.
Ramco already has finished one office building at the Town Center, and is close to announcing plans for a high-end apartment complex and 9,000-square-foot restaurant there, he said.
Regal, which owns the largest theater circuit in the country, plans to put digital projection and stadium seating in every theater at Regal Fredericksburg 15. Two of the theaters will be combined into one larger space. The complex then will be renamed Regal Cinemas Fredericksburg Stadium 14.
Regal's new theater in Aquia also will have digital projection, since the company is going digital in all of its theaters nationwide. This will allow it to offer such alternative programming as concerts, opera, Broadway shows and sporting events.
Besides digital projection and digital surround sound, Fredericksburg Stadium 14 will have seating for approximately 2,000 patrons and be handicapped accessible. It also will feature:
Real D 3-D projection systems available for 3-D enhanced presentations.
High-back rocking recliner seats with retractable cup holders that can be moved to form seats for two.
An updated concession stand designed to improve delivery times and customer flow. The menu will include all of the most popular cinema snacks, including pizza.
New carpeting and tile in all auditoriums, halls and lobby.
An arcade area for interactive gaming and a new guest service desk offering extra assistance to customers.
An indoor, computerized box office and Regal Express kiosks that will provide fully automated ticket purchasing.
Exterior updates including new signage.
The Regal Crown Club loyalty program, which rewards frequent moviegoers.
Advance tickets available by phone or through REGmovies.com.

With the new, also stadium seating cinema coming across the road at the Spotsylvania Town Center - it is VERY smart for them to upgrade it.
