Shoppes at Massaponax

Last year: The development's name was changed to Palmer's Creek. Part of the property, north of Massaponax Church Road at the intersection of U.S. 1, was zoned for residential, but plans were still to make the property mostly commercial, as was the plan when it was first announced in 2003.

Now: The Palmer's Creek project is on hold as the developer, Palmer's Creek LLC, waits to see how anticipated road improvements and other development in that area pan out.

Spotsylvania Courthouse Village

Last year: The town-style community was still going to be built, according to Bill Vakos III of W.J. Vakos and Co., but the plans had changed slightly. Walls for the first building were going up, with the first occupants to move in by early 2009.

Now: The Village's first three structures are nearing completion. The common area facilities will be complete by late spring, including the Pavilion and fountain in the Merchant Square's Green. Two buildings will be open by midsummer with two offices, five restaurants and 26 apartments. Plans are under way to add further tourism and office components.

Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center

Last year: HCA officials said the 126-bed acute-care hospital was to be completed in 2009.

Now: The building is under way and visible from Interstate 95. The opening is expected in spring 2010.

Spotsylvania Towne Centre and the Village at Towne Centre

Last year: Renovation of the mall, renamed Spotsylvania Towne Centre, was basically complete, and work had started on the lifestyle center.

Now: Spotsylvania Towne Centre's $12 million renovation is complete, and The Fredericksburg Pub has opened in The Village at Towne Centre. Construction is under way for the rest of the Village, and other restaurants and retailers are expected to begin opening there this spring.

In addition, the Residence Inn has opened behind the mall, and Muvico and Splitsville plan to begin construction this spring on their Muviville Entertainment Complex, a 12-screen theater with 14 lanes of bowling alley and upscale bars. Plans call for it to open by the end of the year.

Stafford Hospital Center

Last year: Construction on the 100-bed hospital (permit awarded in 2006) was to be completed in March 2009, with construction on budget and on time.
