Stimulus helps with new trains

Virginia Railway Express is using money from the federal stimulus package to buy new locomotives.

VRE has a $33.1 million order for nine new locomotives from Motive Power Inc. in Boise, Idaho.

The locomotive will arrive in fall 2010.

Nearly half the funding for the order is coming from federal stimulus money--$9.8 million from the federal stimulus bill passed in February, and a $5 million earmark from Sen. Jim Webb in the appropriations bill passed this month.

The order will replace nearly half of the VRE's fleet. Several of VRE's locomotives are four decades old and experience periodic mechanical problems that contribute to schedule delays.

VRE still needs 11 new locomotives, at a cost of approximately $3 million to $4 million per locomotive.
