WALTON'S MOUNTAIN SPRING FESTIVAL

Top picks for out-of-town activities

Date published: 4/2/2009

By Peggy Carlson

Spring is officially here, and with it, the almost irresistible urge to be "on the road" and enjoy the sights, scents and sounds of this beautiful season.

This weekend you can travel to Schuyler, turn back the hands of time and visit the world of the Waltons at the Walton's Mountain Museum Spring Festival on Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The museum will celebrate "company town" life with live music, crafters and food vendors.

The museum is located in the old 1930s-era high and elementary school. It offers replicas of John-Boy's bedroom, Ike Godsey's store and the Waltons' kitchen and living room. John-Boy's spectacles and Big Chief writing tablet are on display, along with other memorabilia from the period.

A trip to Walton's Mountain wouldn't be complete without a stop at Ike Godsey's store. It includes combination-lock mailboxes, a crank telephone, old store display cases, a drink box, a weight scale, a coffee grinder and antique bottles and tins. It also houses the souvenir shop with books, DVDs, gifts and local crafts.

A half-hour video featuring author Earl Hamner and the stars of "The Waltons" is shown throughout the day. The museum also features hundreds of photographs and items of memorabilia.

The museum is located at 6484 Rockfish River Road in Schuyler, off U.S. 29 between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Call ahead or visit the Web site for specific directions, as Mapquest and GPS systems sometimes send travelers out of their way.

Admission to the museum is $6 for ages 6 and up. Children 5 and younger are admitted free.
