Bernice Atkins

Bernice Mae Nicholson Atkins, 72, left this life to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Spotsylvania County.

She was born April 11, 1936, in Madison County, and was the daughter of the late Jack and Josephine Nicholson of Syria, and also was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers. She was a treasured mother, sister, friend, co-worker and companion to many.

A lifelong homemaker and mother, she also worked for many years in the restaurant business, and will be missed by all those who were fortunate to have been blessed to know and love her.

She is survived by her children: Mary Nicholson, Nancy Haught, Victoria Thompson, Sherry Rice, Tina Arndt and Joseph Atkins, as well as their spouses and companions. She also is survived by her grandchildren: Angela, Rebecca, Nicole, Maggie, Christal, Adam, Amanda, Stephen, Christy, Rachel and Kaitlyn; and nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her treasured companion and best friend of many years, Mr. Oscar Dodson of Culpeper; her sister Virginia Bennett of Luray; her brother Aldridge McTandel Nicholson of Seattle, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Annie.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 13, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison, with Chaplain Robert Schultz officiating. Interment will be in Etlan Cemetery, alongside her beloved parents and family members. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, or to the local SPCA.

She flew up to heaven on the wings of angels, by the clouds and stars where no one sees, and she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waiting, and I know she's smiling, saying, "Don't worry about me."
