Einstein Bros. Bagels in the Park and Shop shopping center in Fredericksburg will close May 12, according to a store manager.
Einstein's sits on part of the property that the University of Mary Washington Foundation purchased in late 2007 for its Eagle Village mixed-use project.
Construction on the first phase of that project, which will include student residences, a parking garage, and office and retail space, began earlier this year.
The first phase is expected to be complete in August 2010.
The Einstein Bros. building is scheduled for demolition in the third or fourth week of May, according to R. Jeffery Arnold, president of Concord Eastridge, the firm that the UMW Foundation hired to develop Eagle Village.
Arnold said in an e-mailed statement that Concord Eastridge and the foundation had been working with Einstein Bros. since last August to try to find a new location for the store within Eagle Village, "but recently Einstein's made the decision to cease operations without a commitment to becoming a long-term tenant."
This takes the chain completely out of the Fredericksburg market.
Einstein's other location, on Plank Road, had already closed.
A marketing officer at Einstein Bros. headquarters said the chain has no plans to open any new stores in the area.

is going to be built to connect the campus with the new digs. That will be nice, maybe it will set a precedent. Does anyone know for sure about a pedestrian overpass?
Loosing Einstein's is more than just loosing a place where you get bagels. Christine, newly promoted to a shift manager has always greeted people with a warm smile and chipper attitude, Jenny's great sense of humor, even when crushed with a rush and the ever present Ray to say hi to everyone that is willing to give him a nod are more than just bread. People with relationships, friendships and a great place to hang. Loosing einstein's is loosing a community, not just a bagel store.
My brother and I thank you for you support

Progress moves at the speed of light sometimes. Some seek change, others don't. it is all relative. UMW 's Eagle Village will be massive with lots of energy, creating a unified field of combine economic and cultural forces that will have a universal impact. It is a Nobel cause.

all this anti-semitism is terrifying. What's next? Ovens at wilderness next to the new walmart? For shame.
Having said that, you locals need to appreciate what the yankees have done for your beloved fredericksburg area. Sheeesh. The lack of appreciation is galling...
It is a Joke...

To think that UMW has some secret motive other than being a competitive, in-state school. I have been born and raised in our town, and my family came to this part of VA in the 1600s. UMW must grow with us, as our state and area has. It is a state school and it needs to serve its people. We are not a stagnant population folks...Also, by the way, it is sad to see this business go, it represents a broader climate. Hopefully someone (or some brand/company) can make up the difference. Good luck!
