Harry Porter Jr.
Harry Porter Jr., 90, of Clarksville, Ind., died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Floyd Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., and was a former resident of Fredericksburg.
He was a retired U.S. Army major and had received several awards and honors during and after his military career, including the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. On Feb. 20, 1945, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm for his participation in the reduction of the Colmar Pocket and in 2006 "Chevalier" of the Legion of Honor from the president of the French Republic. He was a life member of V.F.W. Hobart Beach Post 1693 in New Albany and the Military Officers Association. His other memberships included the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4123 in Fredericksburg and the Fredericksburg Sister City Association. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Wiggins Porter; daughter Ellen Porter Hawk; and grandsons John Clinton Hawk and Michael Porter.
Survivors include his wife Doris Porter Andres of Clarksville; his son, William R. Porter of Absecon, N.J.; stepsons Albert W. Andres Jr. of Lanesville, Ind., Robert T. Andres of Clarksville, and John E. Andres of Deland, Fla.; granddaughters Jolane Armentrout of Fredericksburg, Therese Hawk of Fayetteville, N.C., and Regina Swanson of Sebastian, Fla.; grandson Anthony Porter of Absecon; stepgranddaughters Adrian Andres and Ashley Andres, both of Lanes-ville; 14 great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandson.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 8, in Quantico National Cemetery.
The Oak Street Chapel of Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes in New Albany handled the arrangements.
