Spotsy open for fishing after all

Spotsylvania reservoirs will be open for business on busy Memorial Day Monday, and the fishing is good

The Ni River and Hunting Run reservoirs will be open for Memorial Day.

The Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors typically closes the county's two popular reservoirs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays to save money.

Closing on Mondays and Tuesdays was a decision made this budget year. Those days were selected because the county received the least amount of revenue for those two days.

Spotsylvania County Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Brooks said Memorial Day isn't your typical Monday.

"It is just one of our busiest days of the year," he said.

From March through Oct. 12, the county expects to save $23,989 by closing the reservoirs on Mondays and Tuesdays. The two reservoirs are open Thursdays through Sundays from 6 a.m. until dusk.

Brooks said fishing at Hunting Run has been solid. Bass and crappie are the two top catches.

He said the Ni River reservoir, off Gordon Road, is more more established and has more consistent fishing. An attendant at the reservoir said the fishing has been "fair" so far. Fishermen are catching "a whole lot of crappie," he said.

Motts Run Reservoir, off River Road in the county, is managed by the city of Fredericksburg and will be open on Memorial Day.

Fishing there also has been solid, said Josh Crabtree, a park attendant. Crappie, catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill and Northern pike can be caught in Motts Run Reservoir.

"The water level has been changing a little bit, and it takes a day or two for the fish to get used to it," he said.
