Culinary-arts teacher Lee DeMatteo was recently honored as Virginia's educator of excellence by the National Restaurant Association.
DeMatteo is a chef who has been teaching at the Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center since fall 2001.
He was chosen as the state's top educator in the culinary field for 2009 by the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association. He and the other winners from across the country were invited to the National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago the weekend of May 16.
DeMatteo didn't make the trip, but said he was "elated" to be singled out for the award.
"I was pretty much humbled and elated at the same time," he said.
DeMatteo was chosen because of his teaching skills and recognized for his willingness to help students and the community, said Rebecca Reamer of the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association.
"He's a great teacher. He is willing to go the extra mile," Reamer said.
DeMatteo turned to cooking after retiring from the Navy. He trained at Johnson and Wales University's College of Culinary Arts in Norfolk, then spent four years teaching in Fairfax County before accepting his current position in Spotsylvania County.
DeMatteo's two-year curriculum is offered to juniors and seniors. It is based on a curriculum called ProStart, developed by the National Restaurant Association.
The goal of the program is to prepare students to go directly into the work force or on to college, DeMatteo said.
He said he's confident his students are ready for either option when they finish the training program.
