Man held on molest charges from 1980s

Man arrested for molesting children more than 20 years ago

A Spotsylvania County man was arrested yesterday on charges that he molested at least three young girls more than 20 years ago.

Earl Craven Likins, 62, was indicted by a Fredericksburg grand jury this week on three counts of forcible sodomy and five counts of aggravated sexual battery.

Likins was arrested yesterday at his job at Pep Boys in Fredericksburg, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said. He is being held without bond.

According to Bledsoe, an investigation started in December when a city woman, now 33, contacted police about the molestation.

The woman was one of a number of children who Likins' wife baby-sat in the former Likinses' home on Charles Street.

Bledsoe said the woman told police that the abuse against her started in the late 1970s when she was a toddler and continued for several years.

She went to the home several times a week to be cared for, Bledsoe said.

Detective Karen Stubbs' investigation led to two more victims who were about the same age when they were molested.

Interviews with the women, all of whom still live in the area, and Likins resulted in the grand jury indictments, Bledsoe said.

The dates listed in the indictments range from June 1980 to April 1990.

Anyone who was baby-sat at the Likinses' home or may have witnessed incidents there is asked to call city police at 373-1055.
