Infant, man die in I-95 accident

Morning crash on Interstate 95 in Stafford kills young man, infant

A young man and an infant from New Jersey were killed in a single-vehicle crash yesterday morning on Interstate 95 north in Stafford County, said Virginia State Police Sgt. F.L. Tyler.

The crash occurred at 6:40 a.m. just north of Exit 136, the Stafford Centreport Parkway interchange. The victims, both passengers, were ejected and killed.

The driver of a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer lost control of the SUV and veered into the interstate median, Tyler said.

The driver overcorrected, causing the SUV to overturn in the I-95 travel lanes, Tyler said. Another passenger survived the crash.

Rashied A. Kilgore, a 24-year-old from Rahway, N.J., was ejected from the front passenger seat. A 6-month-old baby boy riding in the back seat, Kailei Kenmore of Piscataway, N.J., was also ejected from the vehicle.

Kilgore was not wearing a seat belt, and the infant was not restrained in a car seat, Tyler said.

The driver's name was not available yesterday.

No charges have been filed yet. An investigation is ongoing, led by Virginia State Police Trooper M.A. Oliver.

To clear the scene and investigate the crash, two lanes of I-95 north were closed from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. The center lane reopened at 7:30 a.m. and both lanes had reopened by 8:30 a.m.

The lane closings led to a 10-mile backup as far south as the Massaponax area in Spotsylvania County. Traffic also backed up on feeder roads across the region, including U.S. 1 north and State Route 3 East.

Tina Bundy, a Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman, said traffic on I-95 had mostly cleared by 9:30 a.m.
