The Surgi-Center of Central Virginia expects to break ground on its new building this fall after receiving permission from the state to move.
Dr. Karen Remley, state health commissioner, issued the permit Monday. The "certificate of public need" allows the center to move from its current location near the Chatham Bridge in Stafford County to a bigger building on Dixon Street in Fredericksburg.
"The project will allow us to remain viable and relevant in this changing market," said Surgi-Center Administrator Kenny Ellinger.
The new center will be built on what is now vacant land adjacent to the swimming pool at Dixon Park. It is expected to open in the fall of 2011.
Local doctors did more than 11,200 procedures at the center last year, an increase of about 50 percent over five years. More than three-fourths of the procedures were done by gastroenterologists or by eye doctors to remove cataracts.
The center has four operating rooms and three procedure rooms. These numbers will remain the same in the new center, but each room will be about 40 percent larger.
The project is expected to cost $4.7 million.
United Surgical Partners International, a Dallas company, operates the center in partnership with a dozen local doctors.
