The Culpeper Soap Box Derby--now the world's largest--will be held in honor of a former driver who died in April.
The race also will help commemorate the town's 250th anniversary Saturday.
After car weigh-ins last weekend, Culpeper unofficially earned the title of Largest Soap Box Derby in the World. It edged out Fredericksburg by two drivers, according to Jeff Iula, historian and general manager of the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio.
"We could not have done this without Fredericksburg. They are the reason we exist," said Frankie Gilmore, Culpeper race director.
Fredericksburg's race director, Alvin Staples, helped Gilmore restart the derby in 2003 after its 60 year absence.
The race down Blue Ridge Avenue will be in honor of Carol Anne Brown. She was one of the first drivers when the derby restarted in 2003 and a founding member of the juniors committee in 2005.
Drivers, pit crew members and families will wear pink and green bracelets in honor of Brown, who died at age 18.
Gilmore figures that the world's largest derby title will be a great birthday present for Culpeper.
Stickers with the town's minuteman logo will be displayed on the back of all the cars.
Gilmore and her brother, Tony Troilo, the race president, started the derby as a way to give back to the community for supporting their business, Rosson & Troilo Motor Co. Inc., for more than 75 years.
"It's just been great. Brings the community together and strengthens family bonds. This is by far the best thing we've ever involved ourselves in," Gilmore said.
