Robert R. Hamner, 78, of Fredericksburg died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Hamner was a 1948 graduate of James Monroe High School and attended Bluefield College and the University of Richmond. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War, and was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
Mr. Hamner had retired as a hardware manufacturers' representative.
In the community, he was a member of the B.P.O.E. 875 and Knights of Pythias 22. He was a Mason and past master of the Edward H. Cann Daylight Lodge 1752. He was a shriner and a member of the ACCA Temple Shrine in Richmond, where he was a member of the motor patrol. He was also a member of the Fredericksburg and King George Shrine clubs. Mr. Hamner was a member of the ABACA Grotto and various Scottish Rites bodies. He was also a member of VFW Post 3103 and American Legion Post 55.
Mr. Hamner had been a member and faithful attendee of several area churches. He was a friend to many in the Fredericksburg area, often greeting folks with, "Top of the morning to you!"
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Barbara Wright Hamner of Fredericksburg; his daughter, Diana Lynn Hamner of Raleigh, N.C.; his son, J.W. Hamner and his wife, Penny, of Charlotte, N.C.; his granddaughter, Erin Elizabeth Hamner of Charlotte; his sister, Kitty Wiltshire of Fredericksburg; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 22, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with the Rev. J. Larry Haun, Minister Bill Bates and the Rev. Jim Weadon officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at the funeral home. A time of sharing with the Rev. Richard Headley will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a Masonic memorial service following at 7:45 p.m.
