4 facing charges of mob beating
Four arrested in group beating of teenDate published: 6/24/2009 BY ELLEN BILTZ Four Spotsylvania men were charged yesterday with malicious wounding by mob after jumping and beating a teenager on Post Oak Road. The 18-year-old victim had been out on a date with a young woman and after dropping her off at home, her brother asked for a ride from the victim, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office. After driving a short distance, Scott said, two vehicles pulled out in front of the car and stopped in the middle of the road. The woman's brother, Gregory Wayne Beland Jr., 20, of Spotsylvania, then hit the victim in the head, Scott said. She said three other men then came up to the car, pulled the victim out and began hitting and kicking him. "It was probably a ploy," Scott said, regarding the setup of the vehicles and the woman's brother. Scott said the victim was under the impression that the woman's stepfather, Robert Gary Dotson, 40, was upset the couple was dating and recruited the others to join in the beating. She said the victim sustained injuries mostly to the face, including two broken teeth and swelling on one side of his face. He was treated by rescue workers at the scene, she said. Scott said all four men are charged with conspiracy, on top of the malicious wounding by mob charges. As of yesterday evening, only Dotson had been arrested. He is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Scott said arrest warrants have also been issued for Beland Jr., his father, Gregory Wayne Beland Sr., 47, and Nathan Anthony Barton, 21. Scott said the relationship of the other men involved is not known, although Beland Sr. is possibly the woman's father. Ellen Biltz: 540/374-5424

I THINK THE FOUR OR MORE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BEATING OF THE YOUNG GUY, SHOULD FACE SO HARD TIME, TWO OF THE MEN WHOM ARE 40 PLUS SHOULD KNOW BETTER, THEY SHOULD SET EXSAMPLES FOR THE YOUNGER COMMUNITY MAYBE THEY HAVE A CRIMINAL HISTORY, ONCE IN JAIL, SEEMS LIKE, YOU ALWAYS END UP BACK IN THE SLAMMER! I THINK THEY SHOULD GET A STIFF PUNISHMENT!!! IF NOT THEY ARE OUT DOING IT AGAIN, OR WORSE THINGS. I THINK THE YOUNG GENTLEMEN SHOULD SUE FOR THE INJURIES!!! JUDGES DONT JUST SLAP THEM ON THE WRIST.

In 2003 a person named Robert Dotson was charged in Stafford County with "Computer Threats" and 'Obscene Phonecalls"... the person who filed the complaint against him was named Gregory Beland (all public information). How does one make the leap from pressing criminal charges against a person, to commiting a mob beating with them a few years later? Strange.

This seems like a very similar situation to the student beating
earlier this spring--not different other than the ages of the
participants. The kids lured the two victims to the field, and
these guys set up this kid. Both sets of perpetrators should be
prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of age.
