Key Caroline County offices make a move
Some Caroline County offices are moving into former Union Bankshares buildingDate published: 6/28/2009 BY PORTSIA SMITH Caroline County residents looking to pay their taxes, get dog tags or do other county business will no longer have to go to the Courthouse Complex--because some county offices have moved. The offices of the commissioner of the revenue, treasurer, registrar and county administration and finance began moving into the former Union Bankshares building at 212 N. Main St. in Bowling Green last week. All offices are expected to be open for public business at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. Department of Motor Vehicles services will not be available until Tuesday. "We appreciate the public's patience as we transfer the operations of these county offices to the new location," said County Administrator Percy Ashcraft. "The new facility will allow all offices to serve the public better and give needed office space and storage to all employees." The Board of Supervisors voted this past Tuesday to approve a bid for renovation of the old county administrator and treasurer offices to expand the sheriff's office. To make the building suitable, Sheriff Tony Lippa had requested replacing all exterior doors and one interior door with security doors, installing new carpet and repainting all offices. The lowest bid came in at $43,900 from Haley Builders. According to Public Works Superintendent Allen Ramsey, the money for that renovation comes from the remaining $408,919 balance from the Union Bankshares renovation project, which was estimated to cost $4 million. Ashcraft said the former commissioner of the revenue offices will be turned into the Caroline County Museum. The former Economic Development office will be occupied by the reorganized Public Utilities Department and the registrar's office, for now, will be vacant. Portsia Smith: 540/374-5419
