JUST A REMINDER that fares on Virginia Railway Express trains and FREDericksburg Regional Transit buses will go up this week. VRE fares increase an average of 6 percent starting today, raising the price of a single-trip ticket from Fredericksburg to Union Station to $10.30, up from $9.75. A monthly pass between the same stations is increasing to $285 from $270.

Starting Wednesday, FRED is raising bus fare from 25 cents to 50 cents per bus boarding. FRED's VRE shuttle service will cost $1.25 each way instead of $1.

Also, Martz Virginia/National Coach Trailways' commuter-bus fare is increasing on Monday, July 6. Monthly passes from the Fredericksburg area will cost $280 instead of $260, and one-way rides will cost $22 instead of $21.50.

Dear Kelly: When is VDOT going to repair the on/off ramps in the Fredericksburg area of Interstate 95? They are full of potholes.

--Dave Rababy, Spotsylvania

This week, VDOT's Northern Virginia District will start paving all I-95 on-ramps and off-ramps in the Fredericksburg area, said Tina Bundy, VDOT spokeswoman. The work will be done overnight, weather permitting. So look for smoother ramps soon.

Dear Kelly: Can you tell me who is responsible for removing leaves and other debris from the ditches on the side of roads like Pine Hill Road in King George? Every time it storms the ditches overflow and leaves and other debris cover the road. It makes driving difficult because you don't know if the piles on the road are just leaves or contain branches or glass as well.

--Yvonne Richard, King George

VDOT maintains and clears ditches along state-maintained highways, including Pine Hill Road in King George. The best course of action if you have ditch questions is to contact the closest VDOT area headquarters. In your case, that is the Edgehill office. "They'll gladly come out and take a look at it," said VDOT's Bundy.

The phone number for VDOT's Edgehill area headquarters is 540/775-9876.
