A young Spotsylvania man was charged with 35 offenses after police say he mowed down 14 mailboxes and a stop sign while driving intoxicated, police said.

First Sgt. Liz Scott said the incident occurred about 1 a.m. Tuesday in Oak Grove subdivision off Leavells Road.

Deputy J. Durbin went to Massaponax Drive after a citizen reported that a drunk driver had struck a stop sign and kept going.

The stop sign and a number of mailboxes were on the ground when Durbin arrived, Scott said. Another witness reported that the offending vehicle had just turned onto a nearby side street.

Durbin spotted the 2001 Nissan Xterra as it was pulling into a driveway. The driver told Durbin that he was there to see a friend, but the residents told police they didn't know the driver.

Jeffrey Scott Howard, 20, who lives on Carousel Street in the same subdivision, was charged with 15 counts of hit and run; 15 counts of vandalism; driving under the influence of drugs; possession of marijuana; obstruction of justice; underage possession of alcohol; and drinking while driving, third offense.

He was placed in Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

Howard was already scheduled to appear in Spotsylvania General District Court on July 14 for a driving while intoxicated charge he picked up in November.

Scott said it was fortunate that the incident occurred late at night because a number of children play in that area during the day.
