Viola H. Mason
Viola Haislope Mason, 85, of Stafford County died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was a longtime member of St. George's Episcopal Church.
Viola was the daughter of Fannie Evelyn and Thomas Monroe Haislope, born in Millenbeck (Slab Town) in 1924. She was proud of her Northern Neck heritage and proudly claimed her position as a "Necker!"
Her charm and grace were a product of a genteel life- style. Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Melba Packett of Warsaw.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Samuel P. Mason; her two sons, Thomas Mark Mason and Byron K. Hinton and his wife, Patricia; her grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley Hinton; and her sister, Louise White and her husband, John, of Burkeville.
Mrs. Mason was a retired civil servant from the Department of the Navy at Dahlgren; a life member of the Izaak Walton League for which she was a past president of the Virginia Division, and past member of the National Endowment Board. She served Stafford County for many years as a commissioner on the Wetlands Board.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 10, at Covenant Funeral Service, 4801 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22408, 540/898-4326.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Larry Lenow officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in the Corrottoman Baptist Church cemetery in Ottoman.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the church of one's choice or the Micah Ministries of Fredericksburg, 1013 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
