Kalahari president talks about search for money to build in Fredericksburg

Kalahari announced in late 2007 that it planned to build a 700-room hotel, conference center and indoor-outdoor water park on 49 acres in Celebrate Virginia.

The City Council approved an incentives package that would give the resort a rebate on nearly half of its local taxes for 20 years, plus more than $3 million in upfront fee waivers.

The performance agreement that governs those incentives requires Kalahari to open by Dec. 31, 2010. But the agreement also includes a clause that allows Kalahari to push back the opening date in the event of an emergency situation.

Acting Economic Development Director Karen Hedelt said the global economic crisis qualifies as an emergency.

She said she has already been talking with city staff members about how Kalahari would go about extending the deadline, and that it would not be a long or difficult process.
