You've got bills to pay, school supplies to buy and hungry mouths to feed.

How are you supposed to spend wisely and still put away savings during an economic downturn?

Frances F. Lea, an associate professor of economics and marketing at Germanna Community College, has answers.

She'll be fielding questions on budgeting and savvy spending, especially during the back-to-school season, from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday during our eighth monthly Money Talk$ Web chat.

Lea is a graduate of Hollins College and Boston University, and earned her masters and Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas. She has taught at Germanna for 10 years.

Previously, she taught for many years at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, where she also owned Complete Marketing Services, a full-service advertising and marketing firm, for a number of years. She's still involved in the marketing side of that business.

To participate in Money Talk$, either submit questions in advance by e-mailing them to cjett@free lancestar.com or log onto fredericksburg.com during the chat. Questions and answers will be archived on fredericksburg.com, and a transcript will appear Thursday in The Free Lance-Star's Business section.

Future "Money Talk$" topics will include advice for small businesses, Social Security, health care and saving for college. Feel free to send us ideas for other topics.
