The dog that attacked a 60-year-old woman Sunday and killed her pet Labrador has been found--in her own house. The dog belongs to the woman's son, Spotsylvania Sheriff's spokeswoman Liz Scott said. It is actually a pit bull and not a Rottweiler mix as reported by the victim, Sandra Manes. Scott said police went to 1222 Dewberry Drive in the Wilburn Farms subdivision yesterday evening with a search warrant after receiving an anonymous tip. They interviewed Michael Baggett, the victim's son, who admitted it was his dog that attacked his mother and her dog. The dog had been hidden in his room, authorities said. Animal-control officers took the dog to the county animal shelter, where it is being quarantined. The Commonwealth's Attorney's office is considering charges. Manes reported that she was walking her dog on Dewberry Drive when a Rottweiler ran toward her and started attacking her Lab, police said. Manes was bitten numerous times while trying to protect herself and her dog from the attack. Among her injuries were a broken shinbone and a broken finger. Her dog was so severely wounded that it had to be put to sleep, Scott said. Police put out fliers and made telephone calls warning residents in the area about the vicious attack and urging them to be on the lookout. Spotsylvania Commonwealth's Attorney Bill Neely said last night that if charges are filed, they would likely be misdemeanors. The possible charges include obstruction of justice and allowing a dog to run at large in a subdivision, he said. "At least this will settle the community's fears," Neely said about the pit bull's apprehension. "They don't have to worry about a vicious dog running around free." Keith Epps: 540/374-5404
A man was killed by two of his own pit bulls today in northern VA--another dog was found dead in the home. Very sad. Pit defenders will defend them to the death apparently.
you dont often here of other breeds attacking simply because its not an interesting story to the media and or general public. you obviously are not well educated on the breed. did you know that a pomeranian was breed to be a watchdog. bet you didnt. if they bite someone nobody pays no mind to them. in a link left by another poster about dog bite statistics note in there where a pomeranian mauled a 6 week old baby to death but you dont hear people screaming ban pomeranians. do some research and then decide
I thought it was. I really feel for you having a young child and living there so close to a murderer with a vicious dog. I always wonder how a person can murder someone in cold blood and then be out such a short time later to wreak havoc on the community yet again. Good luck and thx again for confirming that information for me.
It would only make sense that a mom that would lie to cover up for her son would lie to cover up for their dog. Was she prosecuted for lying and saying her son was asleep at the time of the other incident as well? And what about rotti owner's who have been eyed cautiously since this incident? Her behavior continues to hurt others and she should be prosecuted for lying and causing such an uproar. Back page story should have read "Idiot's dog a victim in it's own home". Y'all are right--not even a fi[*#@!]
Yes fugyou it is the same Michael Baggett. This is really disturbing to me because I live on the same street, just a few houses away and on any given day I have a 2 year old outside playing, that dog could have gotten out at any time and could have attacked not just my child but the numerous children that live in this neighborhood. Also I do believe they have children living in the house that the dog was at.
