James Norman Taylor Jr., 63, of Culpeper County passed away Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, after a long illness.
He was born May 9, 1946, to the late James Norman and Marjorie Pierce Taylor.
Jim was a gifted mathematician, which led to his career in surveying. During his 19-year tenure in Northern Virginia, he received his Virginia registered land surveyor license. In 1991, Jim became a founding member and, ultimately, the sole owner of Benchmark Surveying Inc.
Jim was an avid woodworker and metalworker. He crafted guitars, mandolins, furniture and tools. He also built grandfather clocks made of all wooden components. Jim was a master craftsman, but he was best at building lasting friendships. He enjoyed playing guitar, singing and sharing amazing stories with his friends.
Jim is survived by his loving friend and wife of 27 years, Cynthia Taylor Cheatham; his son, Jeffrey Van Taylor; and his sister, Judy Taylor Shupp.
There will be no funeral service. His family will host a celebration of his life for all of his friends and associates. The location and time will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Rapidan.
