Snakebite to the heel happens at night, with no warning
Here's a story for you: Poisonous snake lashes out at a family member in the dark of night
Date published: 8/21/2009

By Cathy Dyson

LAST WEEK, my daughter rode to Charlottesville with a copperhead at her side.

Actually, the snake was in a Glad storage container. That's where her fiance, AJ, dumped it after he killed it with a kayak paddle after the viper attacked my baby.

Diana, 27, called me crying moments after the snakebite, which happened about 9:30 at night outside her Madison County home.

She had been next door, taking care of an elderly neighbor. After she got him settled, she got her flashlight and walked along a pine-tree-lined path toward her house.

The snake wasn't hiding in a bed of dead needles.

It was in her driveway. Diana didn't step on it to trigger the bite.

The snake lunged at her in the darkness.

After she felt pain in her left heel, she shined the light at her foot, then saw the snake, coiled and ready to strike again, about a foot away. She ran to get AJ.

In the time it took him to get up and dressed, go to a shed and grab the only weapon he could find--a plastic oar--the snake hadn't moved.

After AJ killed it, Diana kept a cool head as AJ searched for something to put it in.

"Don't take my good Tupperware!" she ordered, as he slung containers of various sizes out of the cabinet.

Meanwhile, she had called 911, and the ambulance arrived. She was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville because of its poison center.

When AJ and I got to the emergency room, we saw the doctor with the snake and container under her arm.

Throughout the night, the plastic bin was passed around the ER, and we heard different people in scrubs excitedly talking about the copperhead, which was about a foot and a half long.

People seemed even more impressed when AJ told them he used a paddle because he couldn't find a shovel.

One young man, who measured Diana's ankle and leg as they swelled, said he'd seen four snake bites in the last month and a half, but this was the first time he saw the perpetrator.

A nurse told Diana she did everything right. She got medical care quickly and brought the snake to be identified.

Stay calm. Death from snakebites in Virginia is extremely rare.

Get to a health care facility immediately.

If possible, wash the bite with soap and water and immobilize the body part.

Swelling is likely, so remove jewelry or tight clothing near the area.

DO NOT use suction, a tourniquet or electric shock.

DO NOT apply ice, cut the wound or give the victim drugs or alcohol.

other work, but could I please point out that her daughter could have purchased inexpensive health insurance from any health care provider due to her age but chose not to. The 27 year old daughter's policy price is quite inexpensive but she chose to be irresponsible and is now getting funds from a fund that is primarily for those who truly cannot afford it. That is not appropriate. Sorry.
