A strong showing on the summer AAU circuit has sent former Courtland basketball star power forward Josh Hairston rising up the rankings of some recruiting services.
The same can be said for Louisa County native Justin Coleman.
Hairston, a 6-foot-8 Duke University recruit, is ranked the No. 7 overall college prospect in the nation for the class of 2010 in recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons' latest update.
After three years at Courtland, Hairston will finish his high school career at Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Md.
Coleman, who now plays for Henrico High, is No. 25 on the same list. Other recruiting services have taken notice of Coleman, too, after his performance at the NBA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville.
The 6-foot-5 swingman is considered a five-star prospect by scout.com and the No. 4 small forward in his class. Still, he's yet to receive a scholarship offer.
PUTTING UP HER DUKES
King George High School senior Hannah Pierce has orally committed to James Madison University's women's golf team.
Pierce was The Free Lance-Star's player of the year in 2008 and she's earned the past two Battlefield District individual titles, while competing against boys.
She's receiving a partial scholarship from the Dukes, her father, Erik Pierce, said. She's expected to sign a national letter of intent in November.
Pierce received interest from several schools.
Erik Pierce said Western Carolina offered her a scholarship and was her No. 1 choice for a while, but JMU had the academics and coaching staff to sway her.
Pierce also visited Penn State, College of Charleston (S.C.), Furman, Elon and Coastal Carolina.
LYSHER HONORED AGAIN
Chancellor junior varsity field hockey coach Mary Lysher has been inducted into the Patapsco High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Lysher received three varsity letters during her time at the Baltimore school.
It's the second time Lysher has been inducted into a hall of fame. In 2001, she earned the same recognition from Essex County (Md.) Community College, where she was a two-year member of the vol-leyball and lacrosse teams.
MAKING THE ROUNDS
Woodberry Forest School star linebacker Aramide Olaniyan orally committed to Duke in March, but he's still weighing his options.
Olaniyan (6-foot-2, 202 pounds) will also take official visits to UCLA, Michigan, North Carolina and one undetermined school.
The Bowie, Md., native registered 51 tackles and 13 sacks for Woodberry Forest, a private school in Orange County, last season. He's rated a four-star prospect by recruiting service rivals.com.
RAGONESI GETS OFFER
Courtland standout defensive lineman Chris Ragonesi has collected his first Division I scholarship offer.
Ragonesi (6-foot-2, 238 pounds) was offered the scholarship by Liberty University.
