A Culpeper High School student was killed shortly before 5:30 p.m. yesterday when she pulled out in front of a dump truck on U.S. 15, police said.

Alana Michelle Hester, a 17-year-old senior from Amissville, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to State Police Sgt. Les Tyler.

Hester, who had celebrated her 17th birthday just three weeks ago, was pulling out of Simms Drive (which leads to Pearl Sample and A. G. Richardson elementary schools) and turning north toward Culpeper, Tyler said.

The Ford F-650 dump truck, driven by 41-year-old William Nelson Hoyt, was southbound and struck Hester's 2006 four-door Toyota Corolla broadside on the passenger side, Tyler said.

Neither Hoyt nor a passenger in his truck was injured. Both were wearing seatbelts, as was Hester.

Trooper Sonny Riddle, who worked the accident, found no fault with the truck driver, and there were no charges, Tyler said.

Hester was the only occupant of the Corolla.

Culpeper County School Board Chairman George Dasher said that both Superintendent Bobbi Johnson and Director of Instruction Jim Allen would be on hand this morning at Culpeper High to provide student support and that counseling, if needed, would be available.

sad but we all mess up (posted by 1958 , Aug. 29, 2009 9:11 am)
god bless you Alana Michelle Hester.and our prayers go out to you and your family and the poor truck driver.

Hmmm, trucks at fault? (posted by wideopenspace , Aug. 28, 2009 9:55 pm)
Mols, it's sad yes but even the trooper says she messed up so don't look to blame the truck or all trucks for that matter. He wasn't speeding. I go the speed limit to 5 over in my truck and people still pull out in front of me and then lollygag up to speed. Some bug in their head tells people that they must pull out in front of us and get ahead of us no matter what. We're like a train, take us on and your always going to come out on the losing end. She made a mistake and it cost her dearly, RIP.

I Think (posted by observer , Aug. 28, 2009 2:49 pm)
Kim go it right, the car should have been hit on the driver's side. I think the age reference is for the other teen driver and is put in as a warning.

Where did the truck hit the car? (posted by kimcmitch , Aug. 28, 2009 2:15 pm)
If she was turning north and was hit by a southbound truck, wouldn't it hit the driver's side of the car? It's a terrible tragedy and an awful way to start a school year.

Aweful (posted by john1315 , Aug. 28, 2009 1:27 pm)
Our deepest sympathies and prayers for strength go to her family and friends. May you somehow find your way through this tragedy.
