Which direction will Egan go next?
Irene Egan's campaign treasurer, Beth Richardson, claims her candidate is an "independent" and supports schools ["Irene Egan will put education first," July 31].
Ms. Egan seems to be more of a weather vane, changing her direction with every shift in the political winds.
She supported former Republican Gov. Jim Gilmore with a financial contribution. Gilmore is perhaps best remembered for budget cuts that decimated Virginia's higher education system.
Now, Ms. Egan is running as a staunch supporter of public education! The winds must be changing.
Although her husband belongs to the Stafford Republican Committee, Ms. Egan opposes her own party's nominee for Aquia Supervisor, but wouldn't challenge him in a primary. Instead, she filed as an independent.
Unable to become the Republican candidate, Ms. Egan tried to win the Stafford Democratic Committee endorsement but failed. I attended the meeting where she unsuccessfully solicited the Democrats' support.
During the meeting, I asked a question about Ms. Egan's plans to restore the restaurant business in Stafford County. She answered that it was necessary "because of the economy," but did not provide any concrete plans. That's too bad, because restaurants are a source of county revenue and community vitalization.
The Stafford Democratic Committee's endorsement went to Paul Ortiz--a federal employee who must, by law, run as an independent.
After her loss, Ms. Egan's campaign treasurer signaled a new change of direction for her candidate. Then, she bashed the Stafford Democrats in her letter.
Stafford County needs leadership, not someone who shifts with the breeze.
