The Fredericksburg Area SPCA is in a bit of a money crunch because the number of animals it is taking in has increased considerably this year.
"With all of the foreclosures and people losing their jobs, all of the shelters are experiencing an influx of animals," said Debra Joseph, executive director of the SPCA.
The no-kill shelter still owes $500,000 on its new $3 million facility on Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania County. That's basically the SPCA's entire annual budget. Joseph said fundraising efforts are under way.
"We are just waiting to see what happens with the economy," she said. "I think every charity can tell the same story these days to a certain degree."
The old facility in Fredericksburg held about 100 animals. Joseph said the new facility can hold 400 animals and is at full occupancy.
"We have stayed full from the time we opened, and we have a waiting list," she said. "Two-thirds are coming in because of the economy."
Joseph said that in addition to funds, the SPCA could use the following items: dry cat food, Purina cat chow (blue bag only), Purina One chicken and rice dog food, canned kitten and cat food, postage stamps and clay kitty litter.
Fredericksburg Area SPCA (540/898-1500) is located at 10819 Courthouse Road. Hours of operation are Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The SPCA is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

I tacked this information onto the end of the story... I hope that's okay. The infobox was making the front look all cluttered.
