BPOL tax is not so bad, Mr. Milde

September 18, 2009 12:36 am

Stafford County Supervisor Paul Milde's Aug. 26 op-ed ["Only voters can save Stafford business now"] is misleading at best.

He says, "Considering the state of America's economy, Stafford could not have picked a worse time to enact such a tax."

Of course, the BPOL was approved at the July 1, 2008, Board of Supervisors meeting, long before the economy plunged last October, and it won't take effect until 2010.

He talks about how poor businesses in the county--whose taxes were raised last year, requiring them to pay their fair share of taxes after having been subsidized by residential taxpayers for years--can't afford another tax.

He didn't mention that if the BPOL is repealed, taxpayers--who have been harder hit by the economy than any business--will find their taxes going up substantially.

He doesn't mention that every nearby county has a BPOL tax, and he has no way of proving how many businesses located here rather than in a neighboring county because we didn't have a BPOL tax.

Whether opposing BPOL or lobbying for developers at a Comprehensive Plan meeting, it should be obvious that Supervisor Paul Milde does not represent his taxpaying constituents; he represents the developers who finance his election.

If you value the future of Stafford County, I urge you to vote for Paul Ortiz. Elections do, indeed, matter.
