James Whalen
Jim Whalen, 70, died Tuesday, Sept, 22, 2009, at his residence in Stafford County.
Mr. Whalen had courageously battled lung cancer for the past several years. A native of Hartford, Conn., he enjoyed racing and was inducted into the NHRA Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1988. Jim's greatest joy was being a member of the Aquia Host Lions Club in Aquia Harbour, and it was his passion to serve. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award given by the Lions organization.
Mr. Whalen also was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church.
Jim also owned and operated a Honda shop in Arizona. In his later years, he owned a construction inspecting business, operating throughout the country. He also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 until 1959.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Marilyn; his daughter Lynda Tellers and her husband, Tobin, of Pasadena, Calif., and their children, Alex and Nathan; his daughter Kathleen Caudle and her husband, Dan, of Pensacola, Fla., and their children, Cody and Danielle; his son, Gary Westphal of Sterling; his sisters, Charlotte Marshall and her husband, Ross, of Lakehead, Calif., who kept him company these last few weeks, and Frances and Karen, of Northern California; as well as many other aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. A special mention to his aunt Kathleen and uncle Jack Cummiskey, of Hartford, Conn., who greatly influenced the outcome and success in his life.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 27, at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, 1310 Courthouse Road, Stafford. A reception will immediately follow at Aquia Harbour Country Club. All family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at a later date at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colby, Wis. Interment will follow in Colby Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Aquia Host Lions Club, Attn: Bob Hunt for Whalen Memorial Fund, 1020 Isabella Drive, Stafford, Va. 22554.
