There are two interesting events this weekend awaiting if you drive south and east.
First stop might be at the 58th annual Chickahominy Fall Festival and Powwow in Charles City County. The powwow runs Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., with the grand entry at noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. American Indians from around the country will join the Chickahominy Tribe in this fall festival and celebration of American Indian culture and tradition. The event is described as the longest-running traditional powwow in Virginia, starting when the tribe gathered in 1951 at the Samaria India School.
Highlights include American Indian dancing, singing and drumming; and craft vendors with silver and turquoise jewelry, handmade pottery, baskets, painting, leather crafts, wood carvings, native music and more. There will also be traditional crafts and skills demonstrations, historical displays and food.
Parking is free and there is no gate admission. The Chickahominy Tribal Grounds are located at 8200 Lott Cary Road in Providence Forge. No pets or alcohol allowed. For details call 804/829-2027 or visit chickahominytribe.org.
Last stop is the Butterfly Festival 2009, sponsored by the Butterfly Society of Virginia, to be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Virginia Beach. This event features just about everything you ever wanted to know about butterflies and caterpillars. You can see a variety of flying creatures in the vivarium, an enclosed tent filled with local butterflies, and there will be many caterpillars, butterflies and moths on display.
Society members will lead walks through the butterfly garden, and there will be craft activities for all ages, as well as tips for raising a caterpillar until it is ready to fly.
The event also includes a plant sale with hard-to-find butterfly nectar, plants to attract the winged visitors and related books, T-shirts and novelties.
The center grounds have picnic tables, and participants may bring a lunch or purchase refreshments on site. Admission and parking are free. The Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center is located on Diamond Springs Road, north of Northampton Boulevard. For details: 757/486-3056, or Email: butterflyfest@verizon.net.
