Johnson, Eagles shut out Blazers

Michael Johnson scored twice and John Tarley chipped in a goal and an assist as the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team routed host Hood College 7-0 in a Capital Athletic Conference victory yesterday.

The Eagles used five first-half goals to quickly take control of the contest with the Blazers. In addition to Johnson's goals and Tarley, T.L. Tutor and Smith Norton also scored.

In the second half, UMW received goals from Matt Lamb and from Matt Alter.

Mary Washington outshot the Blazers, 33-4, and had six corner kicks to two for Hood. Emmett Rutko, Alec Constantine and Matt Eby combined for the shutout for the Eagles.

The Eagles (6-3, 2-0) will host Wesley in CAC play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

FIELD HOCKEY

Kathryn Morris scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke in overtime, lifting Catholic over the visiting Eagles in a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference decision. The Eagles fall to 5-3 on the season.

Former Stafford standout Jackie Tait gave UMW the first lead with a penalty corner score early in the second half. Catholic tied the score with less than seven minutes remaining.

VOLLEYBALL

The Eagles dropped a five-set decision at Salisbury University. Set scores were 19-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-16, 16-14.

The Eagles held an 8-4 lead in the fifth set, but Salisbury cut the deficit to 11-10. The Eagles padded the lead to 14-11 before Salisbury ended the match with five straight points to take the decisive set.

Karissa Herrick had 10 kills and six blocks for the Eagles, while Laura Gomez added 10 kills. Anne Lutkenhaus scored 12 kills, and Lindsey Scott provided 23 digs. Katie Shiflett had 14 digs and 18 assists.

Mary Washington (8-4, 1-1 will play in a quad match at Sweet Briar College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
