Meredith 'Med' Standley

Dr. Meredith Ralph "Med" Standley, 73, of Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009.

He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Nov. 20, 1935. Dr. Standley graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology; at Emory Candler School of Theology, Emory University, he earned a Master of Divinity; at George Washington University, he earned a Master of Sociology; at Long Island University he earned a Master of Science in counseling; and at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary, he earned a Doctor of Ministry.

Dr. Standley served 28 years of active duty as an Army chaplain. He graduated from the Chaplain Career Basic Course, the Chaplain Career Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College and Army War College.

He served two years in the Vietnam War and held leadership positions during his Army career.

At Fort Myer in the late 1960s during a 37-month assignment, he conducted 3,500 funerals and ministered to grieving families. In addition, he presided at 1,200 weddings and 115 baptisms.

Dr. Standley helped in the assignment of the first senior chaplain assigned as the spiritual adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He initiated the assignment of the first Buddhist chaplain and Muslin chaplain. He implemented the first kosher MREs for military personnel.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Five Oak-leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star with two Oak-leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, the Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, and the Vietnamese Medal of Honor.

After retirement from the Army, he served as the chaplain of a college and taught Bible courses.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sherry O'Barr Standley and their two children, Daniel O'Barr Standley and his wife, Julia Crosby, of Coto Da Caza, Trabuco, Calif. and Kathryn "Kitty" Ruth Standley-Downhour and her husband, David, of Spotsylvania County.

He was the proud grandfather of Nicholas Crosby Standley, Nathan Crosby Standley, Sherry-Anna Downhour, and Kaitlyn Meredith Downhour.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove. Immediately following the visitation, a service will begin at 7 p.m. Interment, with full honors, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in Arlington National Cemetery.
