Why not alternative medicine?

Why not alternative medicine?

Medical insurance companies routinely deny coverage for successful methods of treatment that have been recognized by the alternative medical community for decades (e.g., prolotherapy, large doses of Vitamin D).

I believe this is the most egregious example that these bureaucracies, in collusion with most of our elected legislators, seek to benefit financially, at the expense and dismissal of their own constituency.

I desire that this approach ceases, for whatever period this country remains in existence.

One reason for lack of research in the area (posted by Ron_C , Oct. 1, 2009 11:51 pm)
is who will fund it, not the drug companies, they want to spend their research $$ on things that have a profit potential. If they were to prove that vitamin C could prevent scurvy for example, that doesn't have much upside for them, they can't get a patent on oranges and limes. So noone funds the studies, and without the studies, insurance won't cover the treatment. I think it's less about conspiracy than their own self interest though.

Research-based medicine (posted by irishsignora , Oct. 1, 2009 9:39 am)
To add to True-Bob's excellent point, I actually would like to see more research dollars directed towards some of the "alternative" therapies that have shown promise. Unfortunately, I suspect that there's less glamour and fewer dollars to be had from scientifically proving or disproving the efficacy of these kinds of remedies than in discovering the cervical cancer vaccine. I do concur that insurance of any kind should not be compelled to pay for an unproven treatment.

We have unanimous agreement. Let there be dance, music and drink in the village...

Seriously, I think (posted by True_Bob , Oct. 1, 2009 6:31 am)
it's important to find any means of healing. The problem with most alternative techniques is that they are supported by anecdote (woo) and not science. Some alternative approaches, I expect, work well. Others are sheer nonsense. The importance is to carefully examine a given technique, and provide scientific support. So prolotherapy may work, large vitamin doses may work (they have their risks) but proponents need to prove it. Crystals, diluted water, and hand waving probably don't work.

which they know little, to treat diseases about which they know less, to patients about whom they know nothing. The role of the physician is to entertain the patient, while nature takes its course". Voltaire
