Bill Gray was in the Front Royal area this summer for work, and he happened to stop by the nearby Foodway Supermarket.
The Spotsylvania County man, a builder for BK Cypress Log Homes, has been playing the lottery for 25 years, and he's never won anything worth more than $100.
At first it appeared that the ticket he bought at the Foodway Supermarket for the Virginia Lottery's Cor-vette Cash game was no different. It was a loser.
So Gray sent the ticket to the Virginia Lottery, which held a second-chance drawing Sept. 1 among all the losing tickets it received in the Corvette Cash game.
Gray had 80 tickets in the drawing, each of which he had bought for $5. The ticket Gray purchased in Bentonville came up as the winner among more than 139,000 entries.
"It feels really good," Gray said yesterday while collecting his prize at Radley Chevrolet in Spotsylvania. "I have a lot of non-winning tickets."
The top-of-the-line 2009 Chevrolet Corvette convertible that Gray won has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of about $68,500. It's black with black leather seats and is fully loaded. It has a 6.2-liter V-8 engine that can push the Corvette to 180 mph.
Radley gets to book the car as a sale, which pleased the dealership. The Virginia Lottery pays for the car and all taxes, including the income tax Gray has to pay. Taxes are estimated at $30,000, making the total package worth about $100,000.
Gray drove the car on a short spin after the ceremony and said he planned to go for a longer ride before returning to his home near Massaponax High School. The Corvette won't get lonely: Gray owns six vehicles, including a 2008 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang.
Gray plans to build a garage for his new toy, which came as a result of the building job he had in Front Royal.
"That was a good job," Gray said.
