WATERFORD HOMES TOUR BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE

Top picks for out-of-town activities

By PEGGY CARLSON

The village of Waterford in Loudoun County is a National Historic Landmark, well worth a visit any time of year. But if you go this weekend and take in the 66th annual Waterford Homes Tour and Crafts Exhibits, locally known as the "Waterford Fair," you will find even more to see and do.

Many of the residents of Waterford live in homes with hand-dug wells, low ceilings, and no air conditioning or cable TV. The houses date from the late 18th century through the Federal and Victorian periods and into the 20th century.

Some of the homes are open for tours during the rest of the year, but at fair time there is a full slate of homes to view. Docents will introduce visitors to the people who once lived in Waterford, including Quakers and staunch abolitionists, slave-owners, merchants, artisans, freed slaves and others.

The homes tours include:

Friday:

James Moore House, Hough Brothers House, Braden House, Hague Hough House, Francis Pierpoint House.

Saturday:

Jacob Mendenhall House, Shawen House, Marshall Claggett House, Trouble Enough Indeed, The Sugar Shack.

Sunday:

Jacob Mendenhall House, The Dormers, Asa Moore House, Marshall Claggett House, The Sugar Shack.

The fair is known as a "teaching fair," and crafters and artists conduct demonstrations of their work throughout the event. They produce and exhibit a plethora of items, including baskets, bride and band boxes, candles, ornaments, dolls and toys, wreaths and herbs, folk art, metalwork, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, musical instruments and much more.

The Red Barn Art Exhibit is housed in a period red barn during the fair, featuring work by local and regional fine artists. The Art Mart is located on the ground floor in the same Red Barn on Second Street, and houses more paintings for sale. There is a $450 price ceiling for these works.

A photography exhibit will be held upstairs at the Old School on Fairfax Street, featuring hundreds of photographs by some of the region's most-talented photographers.

The fair runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the fair is $15 at the gate for adults and teens and $13 in advance. Children 12 and under are free.

Tickets include parking, admission, tour houses and all exhibit buildings, all entertainment and re-enactments, crafts demonstrations and children's activities.
