F. Samuel Baechtel

Frank Samuel Baechtel passed away Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Baechtel was the son of the late Harry A. and Elizabeth C. Baechtel. He was the first child born in Fredericksburg on Jan. 1, 1943. However, his early years were not spent in Fredericksburg, but rather in Charleston, W.Va., and Berryville, Va.

After graduating from Virginia Tech with a Ph.D. in biochemistry, he joined the staff of South Western Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He spent 12 years at the school teaching and conducting cancer research.

In 1982, he moved back to Fredericksburg to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Laboratory Division, at Quantico. He was a member of a very small research group that developed and adapted DNA typing methods for the criminal forensic field. After the development of the typing methods, he spent much time teaching these methods to police agencies in the United States. Before retiring from the FBI in 2008, he worked with lawyers to help them to understand DNA evidence used in trials.

In passing, he wishes good health and joy to his family, friends and colleagues at the FBI. A special thanks to all who took care of him during his many chemotherapy sessions. A quote from Sammy: "If there are angels, some toil as nurses at Hematology-Oncology Associates of Fredericksburg."

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Rebecca H. Baechtel; his son, Matthew S. Baechtel and his wife, Adrian; two grandsons, Mark and Ryan; and a granddaughter, Jordan.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, 4801 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22408.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Trudy Clifton, 113 Tallpines Ave., Locust Grove, Va. 22508 or to a favorite charity.
