Get prescription card online

Get ID card faster for discounted prescription drugs

Date published: 10/6/2009

Participating in a state program that provides discounts on prescription drugs has become easier for Spotsylvania County residents.

County spokeswoman Kathy Smith announced last week that the county has partnered with the National Association of Counties to offer identification cards directly online.

The ID card can be used immediately at any participating pharmacy. The online card is not meant to replace the normal printed ID cards, but can be used as a convenient option for those who want to get the discounts right away.

The Web site is open around the clock.

Those who already have prescription drug coverage still can save money by using the card for drugs that the health plan will not cover. Smith said the program is most beneficial to county residents who are underinsured or uninsured. A person does not need to be enrolled in Medicare program to participate.

The program is free, and there are no restrictions on the number of times a resident can use the card. Cardholders' family members also can use the card.

NACO estimated that a cardholder can save an average of 22 percent off the full retail cost of prescription medications. The card ensures the lowest price because pharmacies sometimes price medications at a lower amount than the discounted rate.

Most major-chain pharmacies participate in the program, said Andrew Goldschmidt, NACO's director of membership marketing.
