BPOL is bad; vote for Paul Milde
The sheer economic ignorance displayed by Kay Pollock in her Sept. 18 letter is mind-boggling ["BPOL tax is not so bad, Mr. Milde"].
She sneers at the plight of local business owners facing the oncoming BPOL tax, suggesting they should do more to lighten residential tax burdens.
I was at the hearings. I was saddened and concerned that a county government turned against the people who put them there. The people present were estimated at running 10-to-1 against the BPOL.
Perhaps Ms. Pollock would prefer that business owners pay the BPOL tax rather than hire Stafford residents, make contributions to retirement plans, or offer affordable health plans.
She clearly doesn't understand that businesses don't pay taxes. They merely collect them for the government. The tax is passed along to the consumer as a cost of doing business.
If, come January, you want to pay more every time you buy something, by all means vote for the kind of candidates Ms. Pollock supports.
But if you can't afford to pay more to finance higher government spending, vote for candidates who will work to roll back taxes like the onerous BPOL.
The choice is clear. Re-elect Paul Milde to the Board of Supervisors.

OF COURSE! ALL Stafford business owners were there
voicing their opposition and dominated the public debate. I
suspect the BPOL tax will actually cost Stafford consumers
virtually nothing in prices they pay for goods. There are
more businesses in Prince William and Spotsylvania than
there is in Stafford and both of those counties never saw a
mass exodus to Stafford which STILL doesn't collect BPOL
tax.
Anti BPOLers ignore the FACTS

For 14 straight years, before the current economic downturn (that is starting to end), BPOL revenue grew in Spotsy, Fred and PrWm. That means business grew and thrived with BPOL. $264M in BPOL revenue is not chump change to those local governments. Do anti-BPOLers only shop in Stafford ?
