Infected with 'socialism'? Let's examine the list

If it weren't for 'socialism,' we'd have nothing at all

Date published: 10/11/2009

I have friends who fear all things socialist and think the current administration is starting a socialistic movement in this country.

I did a little research to see if we had been infected with the socialism disease. I found we are indeed infected and may need some shots!

Here are a few of the programs I found that we have been using for some time: civil service retirement systems, federal employee retirement systems, Medicare, Medicaid, military retirement systems, and veterans' hospitals.

Don't forget the national school lunch program, school breakfast program, libraries, national parks and road systems, and police and fire protection (yes, government paying for police and fire protection is socialism).

There's also unemployment insurance, Social Security, temporary disability insurance, public education, the railroad retirement system, Amtrak, food stamps, workers' comp, minimum wage, welfare, farm subsidies, price controls (the government does control prices on some products), low-income home-energy assistance, temporary assistance for needy families, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

The list goes on and on.

I got to thinking about these programs and whether the country would be better off with or without them. Everyone will have a different opinion about that.

I think most of us would say yes to some and no to others. However, if that is the case, isn't it hypocritical to condemn other proposed programs simply because you view them as socialist programs?

As my grandfather would say, "That is speaking out of both sides of your mouth."

Hate to do it, but you left me with no choice (posted by DRay9529 , Oct. 12, 2009 4:07 pm)
because you are being a hypocrite. This isn't about the govt spending money. It's about your opposition to Obama. Again, we got into nation building under Bush when he said we wouldn't and are spending OUR money on other citizens. I've been reading these posts for nearly two years and not once do I recall you upset about the Bush admin spending. When we have a change in the office you and the other TEA nuts all of a sudden become fiscally responsible. Give me a break!

Domestic spending within the limits of a budget would be acceptable provided that they follow, for example, the guidelines set forth in the Constitution. Government doesn't have a very good track record with spending, and considering it's OUR money, we ought to be able to tell them "NO!" when it's appropriate. When the government fears the people, there is liberty, when people fear the government, there is tyranny. Something to consider. Obama is NOT the solution, just another part of the problem.

A predictable response although I never assumed that you didn't do your research. I have no problems with defense spending. My comment was about YOU being upset about domestic spending and not about $$$ being sent to another country to support their citizens. We are drink "kool-aid", just mine tastes better since it is mixed with liberal and conservative views. BTW, you do a poor job of iritating liberals.

In regards to my post ID, One need only look up the definition of "IRONY". Thank you for assuming that I hadn't taken the time to research who the original user of that pseudonym was, and what his beliefs were. I'll assume the same of you concerning your apparent support for a less than mediocre baseball team. Another assumption on your part are the feelings (irrelavent) we may have concerning war spending. Some things are necessary for our survival as a nation. Still you drink the Kool-Aid.

The only one who is using us (posted by DRay9529 , Oct. 11, 2009 10:30 pm)
is the spin doctors who have an agenda. Instead of trying to help the government or finding common ground you lunatics just keeping making matters worse. There is a way to oppose and I applaud those that exercise their right, but you cross the line with some of the more ludricious comments. Look at the death panels comments to find your example. There are those that do try to use us, but the majority are attempting to do the right thing.
