Seven members of Bethany Baptist Church drove their tractors to Sunday services yesterday as a way to recognize the congregation's country character.
"We're somewhat of a farm community so we wanted to go back to our rural roots," Aaron "Deere Man" Faulconer said shortly after arriving at the Woodford church on the chilly morning.
Faulconer and the six others in the tractor caravan--Mark Irving, Danny Lee, Matt Faulconer, Harry Newman, Chris Johnson and John Gatewood--drove to the church together from Irving's home, where they met for breakfast at 8 a.m.
Some took their tractors to the staging area on trailers, while others drove the tractors there from home.
Gatewood's three-mile tractor ride was the longest.
Aaron Faulconer said the idea for "Drive Your Tractor to Church Day" came from an article he saw about a similar event in the Midwest.
Bethany Baptist, which is at 5001 Arcadia Road in Spotsylvania County, had been planning the special tractor ride for several months.
The event was also a way to get publicity for the church's annual fall festival, which will be held this Saturday.
Matt Faulconer, Deere Man's father, said it was a "new and different way to get people attracted to the church."
Aaron Faulconer wasn't the only Deere man in the group. Four of the seven tractors were John Deeres, two were Fords and one was an International.
"We're country folks and we're proud of it," said Bethany Baptist member Mike Johnson.
